Before LASIK eye surgery, some initial tests include measuring corneal thickness, refraction, corneal mapping, air pressure, and pupil dilation. Once you have gone through the initial evaluation Dr. Kumral will answer any questions you may have. Afterwards, you can schedule an appointment for the procedure.
PREPARATIONS FOR BEFORE SURGERY
Do not wear your rigid gas permeable contact lenses for about one week before your evaluation. Soft lenses shouldn't be worn for at least 3 days before the evaluation.
Be sure to bring your eyeglasses to the consultation so your prescription can be reviewed.
PREPERATION FOR THE DAY OF SURGERY
Plan to have someone drive you home after surgery.
On the day of your surgery, eat a light meal before going to the doctor and take all of your prescribed medications.
You may wish to bring your sunglasses as your eyes might be sensitive to light after surgery.
Do not wear eye make up or temporary eye lashes. No problem if you have permanent eye lash extensions or if you have permanent eye make up.
Don't wear any bulky accessories in your hair that will interfere with positioning your head under the laser.
If you are not feeling well that morning, call the doctor's office to determine whether the procedure needs to be postponed.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING LASIK EYE SURGERY?
During LASIK eye surgery, a thin flap is created in the cornea. The cornea flap is then painlessly peeled back and the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped using excimer laser. After the cornea is reshaped so that it can properly focus light onto the retina, the cornea flap is put back in place and the surgery is complete. LASIK is performed while the patient is under local anesthesia in the form of eye drops and usually takes about 10 minutes to complete. Patients may also request mild sedation.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT DURING LASIK EYE SURGERY?
Your doctor will give you prescription eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation and eyedrops to keep your eyes moist. These drops may cause a momentary slight burn or blurring of your vision when you use them. Do not use any eye drops not approved by your eye doctor.
After LASIK operation do not take a shower or let water touch your eyes for 24 hours. After PRK or LASEK for 72 hours or 3 days. Your Dr. will give more direction on this on your post operative check up the day after surgery.
It goes without saying but better safe than sorry...DO NOT RUB your EYES. Your eyes can be irritated and watery, you only should wipe the drops from your face without touching your eyes.
